Home phone

A line at home that just works.

Unlimited nationwide calling, your existing number transferred where it is eligible, robocall screening, and 911 that carries your service address. Digital voice depends on your broadband and mains power, so keep a charged mobile for outages. Usually cheaper than a single mobile line.

Why it goes wrong

Small line on the bill, useful in the moments that matter.

A home line earns its place in three situations: patchy mobile coverage indoors, older relatives who prefer a handset, and alarm systems that want a line. If none of those apply, we will happily tell you to skip it.

Clear, dependable calls

Digital voice from established providers, with voicemail, caller ID and call screening included on most plans.

Unlimited calling

Nationwide calling is standard, and several plans include Canada, Mexico and the U.S. territories.

Keep your number

Number transfer is routine. We submit the request with the order so nobody has to learn a new number.

Address-aware 911

A fixed line passes your service address to the 911 center, which a mobile does not always do indoors. It runs on your broadband and mains power, though, so in a cut or an outage the line is down — keep a charged mobile as the backup.

What setting it up involves

From the street to the shelf

Two engineers working on fiber cabling
The line to the property
A modem and router on a shelf beneath a television
The equipment indoors
Two people online at once in the same room
Everything running at once

Worth knowing first

These are the questions a provider’s own order page will not ask you. We work through them before anything is placed.

Talk it through
  1. 1
It usually needs power and internet

Digital voice runs over your broadband. If you want a line that survives an outage, ask us about battery backup.

  2. 2
    Standalone availability varies

Some providers only sell home phone alongside internet. We will tell you which applies at your address.

  3. 3
    International calling is an add-on

The base plan covers the U.S.; international packages are a few dollars more.

Good to know

Home Phone questions.

Can I keep my current number?

In almost every case, yes. The new provider transfers it during activation and we submit the request when we place the order. Keep the old service active until the transfer completes.

Is this the same as a mobile plan?

No. This is a line for the house. For cell plans see our Mobile page, which is a different setup.

Will it work if the power goes out?

Not by default, because digital voice needs your internet equipment. Some providers offer a battery backup for the modem. Tell us if that matters and we will factor it in.

Do I need a home phone for a security system?

Most modern systems use cellular and internet rather than a phone line. If you have an older panel, we will check what it needs.

Call us and we will use your number to deal with that enquiry, and pass it to the provider if you place an order. Automated calls and marketing texts need your separate say-so, which an agent will ask for on the call. Consent is not a condition of purchase. See our TCPA Consent policy.

Ready when you are

Tell us the address. We’ll take it from there.

One conversation covers internet, TV, phone, mobile and security for the whole home — what reaches the address, what it costs after the promotion, and when it can be installed. Free, and there is nothing to sign up for.
